PULA: 15 min from Pula airport. Very good location for people coming from Western Europe by car. An important port located in the southeast end of the Istrian Peninsula. Cruising from here is a blend of sheltered sailing and more challenging longer sails with stronger steady winds.
ZADAR and BIOGRAD (Kornati Islands) :25 min from Zadar airport, one hour from Split airport. The 140 Kornati Islands offer the ultimate Croatian cruising. A large part has been designated a National Park because of its natural beauty. For the most part, the islands are uninhabited. Crusing the Kornati Islands is very manageable with an easy line- of-sight sailing in wonderful conditions.

Split is a perfect jumping off point to explore the Dalmatian Islands on your way down to Dubrovnik.
DUBROVNIK : The " Pearl of the Adriatic" has been restored to its former beauty. Words do not give justice to this dazzling city with marble-paved squares, narrow cobbled streets, churches, palaces, monasteries surrounded by fortifications and magnificent medieval walls. This ancient town is a treasure trove of architectural and cultural masterpieces, carefully preserved over the centuries.

Climate in Croatia
The climate is Mediterranean along the Adriatic coast (warm dry summers, mild winters) with 2,600 hours of sunlight on average yearly (one of the sunniest coastlines in Europe). The coastal areas have hot, dry summers and rainy winters yet the inland areas are cold in winter and warm in summer. The coast benefits from refreshing winds in the summer. Sea temperatures in August it can be as high as 26 degrees, due to warm currents flowing north up the Adriatic coast. In spring and early summer a sea breeze, perfect for sailing, keeps the temperature down along the coast.

Currency : The Croatian currency is the kuna, which is divided into 100 lipas. The kuna is overvalued but is a stable currency. The current rate of exchange stands at $1=6 kunas.

The health service is of a good standard. You have to pay for seeing a doctor or being treated in a hospital. Certain countries such as European countries have reciprocal medical arrangements whereby, in principal, you should not have to pay for any emergency treatment. It is therefore useful to wave you passport first and mention this.
Qualifications in Croatia
There are strict regulations making nautical licenses mandatory for bareboat charters. If planning to bareboat, it is crucial to confirm that your license is acceptable by the charter company and to have in writing that confirmation. A VHF license is also mandatory. US citizens may obtain one easily for a small fee from the FCC website.
